Safeguard

Godolphin’s former brilliant Melbourne and Sydney juvenile winner Safeguard, who possesses an aristocratic pedigree, has been bought for stud duties by prominent WA breeding nurseries Oakland Park and Mogumber Park.

The four-year-old, a son of 2012-13 premier Australian stallion Exceed And Excel, won at each of his first three starts and capped the hat-trick with an impressive victory in the Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

A powerfully conformed chestnut, Safeguard was foaled by 2000 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) winner Preserve, a daughter of breeding gem Canny Lad.

Preserve is a half-sister to Group 1 Golden Rose winner Denman, a $1.2m stake-earner who is making an impressive start to his stud career.

Oakland Park principal Neville Duncan, in partnership with Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey, of Mogumber Park, seized an opportunity to buy Safeguard after he won a recent Randwick barrier trial.

“After talking to Godolphin representatives about buying a potential sire, we just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Brown said.

“We didn’t hesitate when Safeguard became available.

“He’s a very exciting stud prospect, being a son of exceptional two-year-old sire Exceed and Excel.

“The 2013 Golden Slipper winner Overreach is by Exceed And Excel and the stallion’s progeny also have overseas Group 1 success to their credit.

“Safeguard is deep girthed, with abundant strength in the hindquarters and stands 15.3 hands.”

Peter Snowden originally trained Safeguard, who started a $2.80 favourite when winning over 1000m at Flemington in his debut.

He was the 2013 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) winner at Randwick in his second appearance.

Safeguard followed his Vain Stakes win with a second in the Blue Sapphire (1200m) at Caulfield.

He went on to run third in the Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill and was a Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) runner-up.

“Safeguard is due in WA next month,” Brown said. “He’s assured of good quality books from Oakland Park and Mogumber Park.

“His first-season fee will be $8800. Lifetime breeding rights are on offer and we expect them to be popular.”
